Repairing Damage
Most damage to an Oriental carpet can be repaired, some at very reasonable cost.
Pasha's Carpets offers a range of repair and restoration services, and
free estimates on all work.
Fringe Repair
The fringe is an integral part of the foundation structure of a hand-knotted
carpet. Typically, the pile of a carpet is bordered by a small
unpiled selvage of foundation, and then the warp threads are knotted to prevent
unraveling and then left as a tasseled border. If a carpet's fringe
has deteriorated over time it can be repaired, replaced or recreated using methods
descibed below.
Overcasting: This
stitching technique can be used to prevent further unraveling of the end of
the carpet. This step is usually done before any fringework is
attempted.
Evening Off: This
involves removing partial wefts and associated pile to restore a straight edge
to the carpet, and depending on the amount of damage the carpet has endured,
it may cut into the border design of the carpet
Fringe Restoration: This
technique is used after evening off of the weft and pile to recreate an even
fringe out of the carpet's foundation warp threads.
Fringe Replacement: A
machine-made fringe can be sewn onto the edge of the rug to restore the appearance
of the original fringe. Since the original fringe is structural
rather than purely ornamental, we generally recommend this only when one of
the two fringes is heavily damaged and a symmetrical look is desired.
Edge Repair
The edge of a carpet is usually wrapped around with wool to stabilize the
edge and prevent separation of the edge warps. If the edge has
eroded or been damaged, it can often be repaired relatively easily by adding
new wrapping wool yarn as needed to match the original edge of the carpet..
Pile Repair
The pile of a carpet may show wear down to the foundation, or be damaged
by moths, fire or various other agents. If a carpet is missing
pile and new pile is needed, it can be woven in using the same knotting techniques
used to create the original pile. Wool yard dyed to match the original,
in a texture closely matching the original, is knotted in at the same knot density
and to the same pattern as the original rug. However, because the
weft threads are already in place, it is even more time consuming to reweave
pile than to produce the original. Large pile repairs (for example
to replace entire areas showing general traffic wear) may be so costly as to
be impractical compared to the replacement cost of the carpet. Note
that pile repair must be done on a good foundation, so if the foundation is
also damaged, that damage must be repaired first (see below).
Foundation Repair
The foundation fabric of a carpet may develop holes from dry rot,
from general damage, or cuts and slits from dry rot, folding or accidental cutting.
These can be repaired by simply gluing the back of the rug, by gluing
patch cloth across the damage, or where foundation is actually missing, by weaving
a patch of foundation into the existing structure, matching the original knot
spacing.
Painting
When an area becomes so worn that the foundation (usually white or
off-white) shows through, the knots can be "painted" using special
dye markers to more closely match the less-worn areas of the rug. This
technique can also be used to deal with isolated weft knots that work their
way to the surface.
Pulled Tufts
Cat pulls require trimming the pulls to create an even pile and to snip
out any pulled foundation threads that have risen to the surface. This
can usually be done with no perceptible damage to pile or foundation, and is
routinely done to any rug that comes in for other repairs.
